Amaryllis is a magnificent flower often associated with the Christmas season. It originates from South America and is grown all over the world for its beauty and long life.
Amaryllis is available all year round. The flower's peak season is autumn and winter. Everyone knows the red amaryllis, but there are many more colors, including white-green stripes, salmon, white, green, pink and orange.
Hippeastrum and Amaryllis: a little history of the names
There are many stories about how the Amaryllis got its name. The best known is a story from Greek mythology. The young girl Amaryllis was so in love with a shepherd that she deliberately wounded herself with an arrow. She did this because of Alteo; the shepherd only had an eye for flowers. Where her blood touched the ground, a beautiful flower grew, and that flower was called Amaryllis.
The name Hippeastrum means "star knight", Hippie means knight and Astron means star in Greek. The name probably refers to the shape of the plant's flowers. The flower is also known as the Naked Lady, because a flower without leaves looks like a lady without clothes!
Amaryllis symbolism
Amaryllis symbolizes pride and beauty. The perfect flower to show affection, for example at a graduation ceremony or to thank someone. If you give an Amaryllis as a gift, you're always making a significant gesture.
Care tips in store
Check the flowers when you receive them, inspecting them for damage. Cut the stems and put them in clean water. For designers: use a tall vase because of the long stems. Are the stems hollow? Then place a stick in the stem to support the flowers.
